Every month, we showcase our monthly book picks. This month, we're delighted to bring you this piece from Aimée Felone, the co-founder of Knights Of. Check out what they're about and take a read of their books!
Who are we?
Put quite simply Knights Of is an inclusive children’s book publisher. We focus on making sure we hire diversely and publish inclusively. That means the people who work behind the scenes, our team, is as diverse as possible – making inclusivity a default for us. We want to bring inclusivity both behind the scenes, in terms of our workforce and between the pages of our books. Ensuring that as many people from as many different backgrounds get to work on our books and as many different stories and voices are published. We exist to make kids books better! We publish for ages five to teen and love stories with bold characters, adventure and heart!
Back in October 2018 we threw a one-year birthday party that coincided with the release of Centre for Literacy in Primary Education’s (CLPE) first Reflecting Realities report. The report showed that only 1% of books published in 2017 had a Black Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) main character. To celebrate the authors and illustrators that existed we created the hashtag #ReadtheOnePercent. The hashtag then became a five-day pop-up bookshop and a crowdfund campaign and two-week popup in December 2018. After successfully raising £50,000 in May 2019 we opened our doors to Round Table Books - Brixton Market’s first and only inclusive children’s bookshop.
